OUR WHY
RANGATAHI ARE OUR FUTURE
Tupu Rangatahi was created to help address the growing number of young people struggling to access employment opportunities.
Youth unemployment in Aotearoa sits at 15% of young people not in employment, education, or training (NEET). This is roughly three times that of the wider working age population – which is at a nine-year high.
Employment inequities are even greater for some communities. Nationally, 19.5% of Māori youth and 18.9% of Pacific youth are not in employment, education or training, while former refugees also experience significant barriers to employment, with only 14% employed one year after arrival, increasing to 35% after three years and 43% after five years.
We know that early work experience, mentoring and practical skills, delivered within a supportive community, can significantly improve long-term employment and education outcomes.
Creating access to these opportunities gives rangatahi greater choice and pathways to build independence, shape their own futures and realise their aspirations and full potential.
Why Tupu Rangatahi?
Rangatahi Māori, Pasifika, refugee and migrant youth experience higher rates of unemployment and fewer pathways into work, despite their incredible potential
Many young people face barriers such as transport, financial hardship, and limited access to training and employment networks simply because of where they come from
Early work experience, mentoring, and practical skills can significantly improve long-term employment outcomes, helping people to live meaningful lives
Tupu Rangatahi will build a supportive network that encourages personal growth, wellbeing, and future success through:
